In a Nutshell: Treatise on the Love of God

Marge Margeton, Daughter of St. Francis de Sales, has written this popularization of the Treatise book for those readers who may find the original DeSales work to be too massive and impenetrable for them without serious and dedicated study and time.
This clear and simple version of Treatise will make this important teaching available to so many more readers, even leading some to further study of the complete text.

Treatise on the Love of God: Contemporary Edition

by Francis de Sales (Author), Bernard Bangley (Editor)

Francis de Sales gives us “a carefully designed, systematic approach to the central Christian theme of love.” B. Bangley. Coupled with Bangley’s understanding of the themes and his skilled writing, he has captured the essence of the original work. Living Love reduces the size of the original 12 books to 12 chapters and yet remains true to the character and content of this classic.

On the Preacher and Preaching

a letter by Francis de Sales
On the Preacher and Preaching
translated and with an introduction and notes by John K. Ryan

Following as it does the historic sessions of the Second Vatican Council, at which the major American contribution has been an insistence upon a return to its honored place of the living proclamation of the word of God, Msgr. Ryan’s translation of this classic is particularly timely and valuable.

During his life as a priest and bishop, St. Francis de Sales preached continually and addressed himself to all groups: to the rich and the lowly and to both Catholics and Protestants. Because of his outstanding abilities and his contacts with all classes of men, St. Francis de Sales was uniquely equipped to write on preaching.

On the Preacher and Preaching is the first English translation of an extended letter addressed to Andre Fremyot, a young priest who had been named archbishop of Bourges. Coming from a famous and devout family–his sister was the future St. Jane Frances de Chantal– the new archbishop was doubtful of his abilities and fearful of facing his duty to preach. Deeply concerned for his friend, St. Francis de Sales prepared what amounts to a treatise on preaching while being at the same time a completely human and personal document.

Preaching is defined and analysed under the four headings of (1) who must preach, (2) why, (3) what he must preach, and (4) into what form he must put his material. How Scripture must be used is indicated, along with use of the Fathers, the classics, natural history, and biography.

Suffused with his love of God and zeal for souls, St. Francis de Sales’ Message is as urgent and instructive today to bishops and priests– and by extension to all teachers– as when he first wrote it more than 350 years ago.

Love is the Perfection of the Mind

Salesian Studies presented to
Alexander T. Pocetto, O.S.F.S.
on the occasion of his 90th birthday

Edited by Joseph Chorpenning, OSFS and Thomas Dailey, OSFS
and Daniel Wisniewski, OSFS

On the occasion of Fr. Pocetto’s 90th birthday this year, an international group of scholars who specialize in Salesian studies contributed to a collection of essays in his honor (a “festschrift”).  Former students, university colleagues, and Oblate confreres have joined forces to explore a variety of subjects near and dear to his loving mind.  His academic interest in these areas of study and his living example of these Salesian themes provide the impetus to this publication, which is presented in tribute to one who, in the tradition of his Salesian patron, has taught so many what it means to be who you are and be that perfectly well.

Along with a bibliography of his writings and a postscript on his career (by Daniel Gambet, OSFS), the book includes essays that touch upon core topics in Salesian Spirituality.  See list of essays below.
